The deity ‘Moreshwara’ inside the sanctum is very attractive. It is in sitting posture, facing east with the trunk turning left & semeared with vermillion mixed in oil. In its eyes & navel, diamonds are embedded. On its head is the hood of Nagaraja. On left & right are brass idols of Siddhi & Buddhi. In front of the idol are the Mooshaka (Rat) & Mayura (Peacock). On doing Abhishek on ‘Moreshwar’all desires are fulfilled. The original idol of Moreshwar was small in size. As many layers of vermillion are applied on it, it looks bigger. Sometimes after 100 & 125 years this armour of vermillion casts off & original beautiful idol inside this armour is seen again. It has been heard that Mayureshwar’s armour had been cast off in 1788 & 1822 A.D. The original small idol wasa made up of atoms of sand,iron & diamonds & it is behind the present statue. It was consecrated by God Brahma reconsecrated it twice. After few years pandavas came there for Pilgrimage. They enclosed the idol in tin sheet, so that nobody can try to destroy it.

Long time back a Sage named Kashyap had two wives, Kadru and Vinita. Kadru's sons snakes imprisoned Vinita's sons namely Shyen, Sampati and Jatayu. Vinita was sorely disappointed . After few years Vinita got one more son. However, when her son was in the form of egg young Ganesh broke that egg and peacock came out of that egg. Newly born peacock had fight with Ganesh. Finally mother Vinita interfered and peacock agreed to be vehicle of Shri Ganesh. However , he laid one condition and said , " Oh! God my name should be pronounced before your name and you be popular by my name." Ganesh agreed and took name Mayuresh for himself. With the help of peacock released Vinita's sons from imprisonment.
The Ganapati Temple at Moreshwar is the first temple as well as the last one to be visited by those who set out on the Ashtavinayak pilgrimage. A silver headed cobra (Nagaraj, the King of Snakes) is to be seen on this temple’s Ganesha idol. The benevolent 3 eyes of the idol literally sparkle with diamonds.
Facing the temple is a mouse (Ganapati’s mount) which is 6 foot high. Also located outside the temple gates is a large sculpture of a bull which is Lord Shiva’s mount (Lord Shiva is Ganapati’s father). As per Hindu mythological legends, the bull was being transported from a Shiva temple located in the vicinity, rested here in front of the Moreshwar temple & then could not be budged from the spot. The bull & the mouse are considered to be faithful guardians of the Moreshwar temple.
An equally fascinating aspect of this temple is the eight Ganapati idols located in the temple’s compound at 8 corners, each of these idols facing a different way. These idols are said to be Lord Ganesha’s incarnations, namely Vakratunda (Lord with a curved trunk), Mahodara, Ekadanta (Lord with a single tusk), Vikata (One who is gigantic), Dhrumavarna, Vighnaraja (Lord of all obstacles) and Lambodara (Large-bellied Lord).

Ganapati’s mount (vehicle) was originally the peacock which he later gave to his brother Skanda. The word peacock in Sanskrit is mayura and in Marathi it is mora. Hence this temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha is known as Mayureshwar or Moreshwar (Lord of the Peacock)
