Sinhagad Fort In Pune :Maharashtra, India

Sinhagad Fort In Pune :Maharashtra, India

If you are a history buff and want to know more about the glorious past of Pune, then Sinhagad Fort in Pune should top the list. Come here to marvel at the simplicity of the tomb of Tanaji, Shivaji’s favourite general. He died here in the year 1670 after a successful bid to capture the fort. Legend has it that Tanaji and his men climbed the unprotected near-perpendicular face of the hill. He is said to have hurled a ghorpad, a local lizard species, tied to a stout, long rope. The ghorpad, called Yashwanti, anchored herself to a crevice in the rock face with strength enough for 300 troops to climb the fort!

Located on a hilltop,  Sinhagad Fort offers amazing views of Pune city. It is also a favourite ground for trekkers as the fort is located at a height of 700m and has an interesting track which you would love to explore. Don’t forget to have some delicious Pithla Bhakri and refreshing Buttermilk which are sold by the roadside vendors when you visit this majestic fort.

Sinhagad Fort is located at a distance of 35 km from Pune. Meaning 'The Lion's Fort', it is situated on a hill rising 800 m above the surrounding countryside. Site of the Battle of Sinhagad in 1670, the fort was previously called Kondana. At an elevation of 1,350 m above sea level, the fort lies on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar Range of the Sahyadari Mountains.

Kalyan Darwaja in the southeast and the Pune Darwaja in the northeast mark the entrances of the fort. Named after the sage Kaundinya, the previous edifice of the fort contained Kaundinyeshwar Temple, caves and carvings. Believed to have been built 2,000 years back, it was captured from the Koli tribal chieftain, Nag Naik, by Muhammad bin Tughlaq in 1328 AD.

A memorial to Tanaj, as well as the tomb of Rajaram, who was Shivaji’s younger son, is also located within the complex of the fort. Military stables, brewery and a Kali Temple are also located within the complex. Apart from the historic gates, the fort complex also contains a Hanuman statue. In addition to being a favourite weekend retreat, it is also a popular trekking destination.

Sinhagad Fort is a popular picnic spot located at a distance of 25km from Pune city in Maharashtra state, India. This is a popular trekking destination for the people of Pune as it is situated on a hill, at a height of 700m above the surrounding landscape. I think most people are familiar with the fact that in Maharashtra state, you can see different forts. It is believed that Tanaji Malusare, a general in Shivaji's army sacrificed the wedding of his son to win the fort. This brave soldier was well supported by uncle Shelar Mama as well as Marathas

Do you know how this fort was named as Sinhagad fort? This fort was named after Kondana, after this brave Tanaji Malusare who fought like a true lion till his death. So Sinhagad fort is sometimes known as Lion fort also. When you get a chance to visit this fort, you can see that it still reflects the story of our Pune city. From this Sinhagad fort, you can also see Panshet, Khadakwasla, and Varasgaon dams as well as the Torana fort. Sometimes this fort is also used for training purposes by the National Defence Academy. Inside the Sinhagad fort you can also see the Samadhi of Tanaji Malusare with that of Shivaji's younger son Rajaram. Once, this fort was the summer house of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the great freedom fighter. You can also see Dev Taki, which is a tank famous with sweet and cold water in Sinhagad fort.

Parvati:The Centre Of Attraction In Pune,Maharashtra India

Parvati:The Centre Of Attraction In Pune,Maharashtra India.
Parvati is one of the favourite relaxation spots for the residents of Pune. The height of Parvati hill is 2100 feet above sea level and 260 feet from the city level. The hill offers an aerial view of the city and the most picturesque scene in the early hours of the day. Parvati hill houses one big and three small temples.

Parvati is the daily visiting place for a number of citizens and for many people, going to Parvati (103 steps) forms a part of their daily exercise regimen. Being the highest point in Pune and having conveniently located observation points, the beautiful panaromic view of  Pune city leaves visitors spellbound. Beautiful sunrise and sunset views are like the icing on the cake. The Parvati gates open at 5.00am to close 8.00pm.

One has to climb 103 steps to reach the hilltop. The steps are an example of fine stone work of the Maratha period. A special black quarry stone has been used for all these steps. It is weather-resistant and except for a few places, the stone has survived for over two hundred and fifty years even after being fully exposed to sun, wind and water. The steps are so wide that an elephant can easily walk with all pomp and gaiety towards the temple. They are not too steep and even old people can climb with ease. It is an enjoyable sight to see children running up and down the hill.

The main temple, as it stands today, was built by the third Peshwa, Shrimant Nana Saheb in the year 1749 A.D. The history of the temple is linked with a miracle. It is believed that Kashibai, the mother of the third Peshwa was suffering from a severe ailment in her right foot. One of her advisors informed her about a temple of Goddess to the South of Pune which was famous for its miraculous healing power. Kashibai went to the temple which was located on top of this hill and prayed for her recovery. She vowed that if she was cured of her ailment, she would build a temple there. She soon recovered and her son built a temple on the hill. This was the famous Parvati temple.

Another belief is associated with the temple of Parvati. Chhatrapati Shri Shahu Maharaj, the ruling king of the Maratha Empire and the grandson of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was pious, kind and a man of high moral character. He had special affection for his minister, young Nana Saheb Peshwa and he entrusted the entire business of the empire to him. The young Peshwa won the confidence of the king and was bestowed with his faith and affection.

parvati hills:the temple enclave and environs
Parvati Hill is situated in the south-east part of the city. Tthe entire place was full of fields, trees and small dwellings during the Peshwa rule. The vast plains at the foothill were often used by feudal lords and dignitaries to put their camps when they visited the city with their armies. There are numerous references of Angres-the Controllers of Coastal area of the Maratha Empire, the Scindias and other Sardars camping luxuriously at the base of Parvati hill.

When Sir Charles Mallet, the British envoy in the court of the last of the Peshwas came to present his credentials to the Maratha power, he camped at the the base of Parvati Hill for more than a week.

After the breakdown of the Panshet water dam and subsequent devastation of parts of the city near the banks of the rivers, the entire base area of Parvati, which originally belonged to the Devdeveshwar Temple trust, was taken away by the government of Maharashtra and was used for building houses. It resulted in complete destruction of lush green fields and gave rise to the growth of slums.

Populars Ganesh Mandals In Pune For Ganesh Chaturthhi: Famous Pune Ganpati Pandals.

Populars Ganesh Mandals In Pune For Ganesh Chaturthhi: Famous Pune Ganpati Pandals.

The Kasba Ganapati refers to both a particular idol of the god Ganapati in Pune, India, as well as to the temple built around the idol. The Kasba Ganapati is the presiding deity (gramadevata) of Pune.

The temple was commissioned by Jijabai, after Dadoji Konddeo reported to her that an idol of Ganapati had been found in Pune. The idol's status as the premier idol in Pune was decided by Lokmanya Tilak.

In the year 1630. The Maratha Aristocrat and wife of Shahaji Bhosale, Jijabai Bhosale arrived in Pune with her then infant son, Shivaji, the founder of Maratha Empire. Around this time, along with other seven families, the Thakar Family migrated to Pune from Indi, Vijapur District. Shri Vinayak Bhatt Thakar also carried his Family deity, Lord Gajanan along with him. All these families settled near River bank around the current place of Kasba Ganapati Temple which was close to the residence of Jijabai. Jijabai perceived this as an auspicious moment and promptly decided to build a temple, which is popularly known as the Kasba Ganpati Mandir.

Since then, Pune is also known as the city of Ganesh. The Peshwas were ardent followers of Lord Ganesh. During their regime Shaniwarwada witnessed grand celebrations for Lord Ganesh.

In 1893, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the Indian Nationalist Leader, initiated the now famous Ganesh Festival. His intention was to gather people sharing similar ideas and exchange thoughts to deal with the British ruler. He started celebrating Ganesh Festival from his own house called Kesari Wada. Due to his personal popularity and initiative, Ganesh Festival became a public festival soon afterwards.

Manacha first ganpati
However, it was only in 1893 that Tilak decided to make this festival public and until now the festival was just a private affair. The Kasba Ganpati celebrated the festival directly from the temple till 1925, but from the following year the residents decided to celebrate it in enclosed mandap (set-up) for more devotees to see. Locally, Kasba Ganpati is also known as Maanaacha Pahila Ganpati (The First Honor Idol or The Most Respected Idol in the city). If you want to reach here you can look out for Kasba Peth near Shaniwarwada and Lal Mahal.

Manacha second ganpati
Tambdi Jogeshwari temple is known as one of the oldest temples in Pune built around 1545. The Ganesh idol here takes the second honor in the city (Maanaacha Dusra Ganpati) and therefore it is the second idol to be immerse during the immersion process. Historically, in 1636, Shivaji Maharaj came here and plough the land near the temple signifying the new beginning of Pune. However, in 1705 a bigger temple was constructed here.

Manacha thired ganpati
Maanaacha Tisra Ganpati or the Third Honored Ganesh mandal in Pune goes to Guruji Talim Ganpati which is located at Ganpati Chowk on Laxmi Road and was the first Ganesh mandal in Pune to spread the message of communal harmony. Initiated by couple of Hindu and Muslim families in 1887, this mandal holds the record of actually being the oldest mandal in India. Historically, these Hindu and Muslim families were celebrating the festival even before Lokmanya Tilak brought the festival on a public forum.

Manacha fourth ganpati
Taking the fourth place of honor in Pune is Tulsibaug Ganesh Mandal that was established in 1901 near Tulsibaug Ram Mandir which is a busy market place just few kilometers away from Swargate station. This mandal is known for the kind of decorations and innovative ideas that visitors and devotees can see here.

Manacha fifth ganpati
Founded by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893 on Narayan Peth Tilakwada this Ganesh mandal (group) is also one of the oldest and takes the fifth place of honor during immersion ceremony. The entire concept of Ganesh mandals was to unite the people of India for freedom fight against the British regime. The mandal still takes up various social and contemporary causes in the society organizing various events and facilities for women and children.

Panhala Fort - At Kolhapur,Maharashtra India:Kolhapur Tourism

Panhala Fort - At Kolhapur,Maharashtra India:Kolhapur Tourism.

Panhala fort (also known as Panhalgad, Pahalla and Panalla (literally "the home of serpents")), is located in Panhala, 20 kilometres northwest of Kolhapur in Maharashtra, India. It is strategically located looking over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range which was a major trade route from Bijapur in the interior of Maharashtra to the coastal areas. Due to its strategic location, it was the centre of several skirmishes in the Deccan involving the Marathas, the Mughals and the British East India Company, the most notable being the Battle of Pavan Khind. Here, the queen regent of Kolhapur State, Tarabai, spent her formative years. Several parts of the fort and the structures within are still intact

Panhala fort was built between 1178 and 1209 CE, one of 15 forts (others including Bavda, Bhudargad, Satara, and Vishalgad) built by the Shilahara ruler Bhoja II. A copper plate found in Satara shows that Raja Bhoja held court at Panhala from 1191–1192 CE. About 1209–10, Bhoja Raja was defeated by Singhana (1209–1247), the most powerful of the Devgiri Yadavas, and the fort subsequently passed into the hands of the Yadavas. Apparently it was not well looked after and it passed through several local chiefs. In 1376 inscriptions record the settlement of Nabhapur to the south-east of the fort..

It was an outpost of the Bahamanis of Bidar. Mahmud Gawan, an influential prime minister, encamped here during the rainy season of 1469. On the establishment of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur in 1489, Panhala came under Bijapur and was fortified extensively. They built the strong ramparts and gateways of the fort which, according to tradition, took a hundred years to build. Numerous inscriptions in the fort refer to the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah, probably Ibrahim I (1534–1557).
Under these circumstances, Shivaji Maharaj decided that escape was the only option. He gathered a small number of soldiers along with his trusted commander Baji Prabhu Deshpande and, on 13 July 1660, they escaped in the dead of night to flee to Vishalgad. Baji Prabhu and a barber, Shiva Kashid, who looked like Shivaji Maharaj, kept the enemy engaged, giving them an impression that Shiva Kashid was actually Shivaji Maharaj. In the ensuing battle (see Battle of Pavan Khind), almost three quarters of the one thousand strong force died, including Baji Prabhu himself. The fort went to Adil Shah. It was not until 1673 that Shivaji Maharaj could occupy it permanently.

The darshan of the city begins with a visit to the Lokmanya Tilak Museum at Tilak Wada which used to be the great nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s home. A few minutes from here is great fallen palace/fort of Shaniwar Wada which once used to be the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire. Built in 1746, the imposing fort was burnt down in a massive fire in 1828. Our guide told us that there was evidence that it was the British who conspired to burn down the fort as they could not stand the sight of the monument that stood for Maratha pride. The massive fire raged for seven days at a stretch and all that is left to see is the grand Delhi Gate (facing towards Delhi) and the solid foundations of the palace. The foundations of the palace have been turned into a garden which is today a popular tourist hangout.

After Shaniwar Wada, our guide Tamble, insured that we scan through the next few stops. Although he did irritate me a bit with his constant whistles and urgings to hurry up, he did have a point there if we were to consider the fact that we had over 15 places of interest to visit before sunset!

The Delhi Gate of Shaniwar-Wada, the old Maratha fort in Pune; little of the rest of the fort survives
Next on the list was the Lal Mahal which was built by Shivaji’s father Shahaji Bhonsle for his mother Jija Bai. It was here that the great Maratha warrior spent his formative years. The Lal Mahal, today, is a museum with a series of paintings depicting important events in Shivaji’s life.

While heading towards the house of the 19th century social reformer, Jyotirao Govindrao Phule a.k.a Mahatma Phule, we also crossed the famous Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple which was founded by, as the name suggests, a halwai (sweet seller).

Trivia: When Amitabh Bachchan was seriously injured during the shoot of his 1983 film Coolie, it was at the Dagdusheth temple where Jaya Bachchan prayed to the almighty for her husband’s well-being. And guess what, he recovered!!

Mahatma Phule’s cottage was a modest Maharashtrian house but one where you feel an immense amount of peace within….only to be hankered by Tamble’s whistle!! Never mind that, but there is this beautiful Banyan tree outside the mud coloured dwelling along with the statues of Mahatma Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule.

Trivia: Mahatma Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule started the first girl’s school in India in 1848. Phule also worked towards upliftment of the backward castes through his social outfit, Satya Shodhak Samaj (Society of Seekers of Truth) and was a key reformist within Maharashtra’s social reform movement.

The Kelkar Museum, the Chaturshringi temple and the Ambedkar Museum were next on our list. The Kelkar museum is a true find. I felt a bit ashamed that even after staying in Pune for three years earlier, I had not visited this rich museum that has on display among other things, tribal art and a variety of warfare weapons used by the Maratha warriors including armoury made of fish scale! This museum has about six-seven separate display areas. Enough for a day!

To get to the Chaturshringi temple, you have to climb over 100 steps. It was built during the reign of Shivaji himself and offers quite a view of Pune from the top of the Chaturshringi hill. The Ambedkar Museum, on the other hand is located with the premises of Symbiosis College of Arts & Commerce.

The theme and design of the Pune Okayama Friendship Garden is taken from the famous 300-years-old Korakuen Garden of Japan’s Okayama City. Spread over 10 acres, this garden offers a much-needed escape from city life through its beautifully designed landscapes and followed by this Japanese wonder was the Saras Baug Ganesh Temple built by Madhav Rao I, the fourth Peshwa of the Maratha empire. We stopped for lunch nearby and I had a delicious yet soothing helping of curd-rice, a must on a hot summer day!

While there is nothing much to write about the Mahalakshmi Mandir, which was next on our program post lunch, expect for the fact that it was a bright and colourful temple; the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park a.k.a Katraj Snake Park turned out to be a haven for snake

lovers…and there are plenty of them! While the lavishly spread out zoo also boasts of a wild animal section but if I were to sum up the great spectacle for you, it boils down to different varieties of snakes at the snake park and lonely white tiger!

However, two of the most impressive sites of Pune turned out to be the last two ones. The Shinde Chhatri temple and the Aga Khan Palace. The Shinde Chhatri temple is dedicated to the memory of Mahadji Shinde, who was commander-in-chief of the Maratha Army in the late 18th century but more importantly the Scindhia Family of Gwalior are direct descendants of the military leader. Anyhow, it’s not the history but the grand architecture and beautiful carvings of the temple that holds the visitor’s attention. A hidden gem and by far the best!

Still, by default, it was the Aga Khan Palace – built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1832 – that comes across as the most important monument in Pune. The reason: it was here that the British imprisoned Mahatma Gandhi for two full years along with his wife, Kasturba, his political secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. It was here that Kasturba popularly known as Ba and Mahadev Desai breathed his last. This beautiful palace holds the samadhis of Kasturba and Mahadev Desai and was donated by the Sultan to the freedom struggle.
