The Pune Darshan tour starts at 8:30 am every day and is conducted by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) – the name could’ve been longer!! I’d advise you to book your tickets in advance over the internet on PMPML’s official site: http://www.pmpml.org.
The darshan of the city begins with a visit to the Lokmanya Tilak Museum at Tilak Wada which used to be the great nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s home. A few minutes from here is great fallen palace/fort of Shaniwar Wada which once used to be the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire. Built in 1746, the imposing fort was burnt down in a massive fire in 1828. Our guide told us that there was evidence that it was the British who conspired to burn down the fort as they could not stand the sight of the monument that stood for Maratha pride. The massive fire raged for seven days at a stretch and all that is left to see is the grand Delhi Gate (facing towards Delhi) and the solid foundations of the palace. The foundations of the palace have been turned into a garden which is today a popular tourist hangout.
After Shaniwar Wada, our guide Tamble, insured that we scan through the next few stops. Although he did irritate me a bit with his constant whistles and urgings to hurry up, he did have a point there if we were to consider the fact that we had over 15 places of interest to visit before sunset!

Next on the list was the Lal Mahal which was built by Shivaji’s father Shahaji Bhonsle for his mother Jija Bai. It was here that the great Maratha warrior spent his formative years. The Lal Mahal, today, is a museum with a series of paintings depicting important events in Shivaji’s life.
While heading towards the house of the 19th century social reformer, Jyotirao Govindrao Phule a.k.a Mahatma Phule, we also crossed the famous Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati Temple which was founded by, as the name suggests, a halwai (sweet seller).
Trivia: When Amitabh Bachchan was seriously injured during the shoot of his 1983 film Coolie, it was at the Dagdusheth temple where Jaya Bachchan prayed to the almighty for her husband’s well-being. And guess what, he recovered!!
Mahatma Phule’s cottage was a modest Maharashtrian house but one where you feel an immense amount of peace within….only to be hankered by Tamble’s whistle!! Never mind that, but there is this beautiful Banyan tree outside the mud coloured dwelling along with the statues of Mahatma Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule.
Trivia: Mahatma Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule started the first girl’s school in India in 1848. Phule also worked towards upliftment of the backward castes through his social outfit, Satya Shodhak Samaj (Society of Seekers of Truth) and was a key reformist within Maharashtra’s social reform movement.
The Kelkar Museum, the Chaturshringi temple and the Ambedkar Museum were next on our list. The Kelkar museum is a true find. I felt a bit ashamed that even after staying in Pune for three years earlier, I had not visited this rich museum that has on display among other things, tribal art and a variety of warfare weapons used by the Maratha warriors including armoury made of fish scale! This museum has about six-seven separate display areas. Enough for a day!
To get to the Chaturshringi temple, you have to climb over 100 steps. It was built during the reign of Shivaji himself and offers quite a view of Pune from the top of the Chaturshringi hill. The Ambedkar Museum, on the other hand is located with the premises of Symbiosis College of Arts & Commerce.
The theme and design of the Pune Okayama Friendship Garden is taken from the famous 300-years-old Korakuen Garden of Japan’s Okayama City. Spread over 10 acres, this garden offers a much-needed escape from city life through its beautifully designed landscapes and followed by this Japanese wonder was the Saras Baug Ganesh Temple built by Madhav Rao I, the fourth Peshwa of the Maratha empire. We stopped for lunch nearby and I had a delicious yet soothing helping of curd-rice, a must on a hot summer day!

While there is nothing much to write about the Mahalakshmi Mandir, which was next on our program post lunch, expect for the fact that it was a bright and colourful temple; the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park a.k.a Katraj Snake Park turned out to be a haven for snake
lovers…and there are plenty of them! While the lavishly spread out zoo also boasts of a wild animal section but if I were to sum up the great spectacle for you, it boils down to different varieties of snakes at the snake park and lonely white tiger!
However, two of the most impressive sites of Pune turned out to be the last two ones. The Shinde Chhatri temple and the Aga Khan Palace. The Shinde Chhatri temple is dedicated to the memory of Mahadji Shinde, who was commander-in-chief of the Maratha Army in the late 18th century but more importantly the Scindhia Family of Gwalior are direct descendants of the military leader. Anyhow, it’s not the history but the grand architecture and beautiful carvings of the temple that holds the visitor’s attention. A hidden gem and by far the best!
Still, by default, it was the Aga Khan Palace – built by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III in 1832 – that comes across as the most important monument in Pune. The reason: it was here that the British imprisoned Mahatma Gandhi for two full years along with his wife, Kasturba, his political secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. It was here that Kasturba popularly known as Ba and Mahadev Desai breathed his last. This beautiful palace holds the samadhis of Kasturba and Mahadev Desai and was donated by the Sultan to the freedom struggle.
