Nowrosjee Wadia College In Pune

Nowrosjee Wadia College In Pune

 History:-
The Nowrosjee Wadia College, currently in its 80th year was established on July 21, 1932 within six months of the establishment of the Modern Education Society on February 15, 1932. True to Its credo 'For the Spread of Light', the college pioneered efforts to open the portals of higher education to the residents of eastern parts of Pune and pursued them tirelessly through the last eighty resplendent years. Over the years, it has become the first choice to acquire an all-round quality education for many promising young men and women all over the country and abroad.

While Pune was known ever since the advent of the British rule as a prominent center of education, the eastern parts of the city were virtually devoid of any educational facilities.

The matter of providing facilities for higher education in the eastern parts of Pune would have remained a distant dream had it not been for a group of prominent citizens in these parts and of devoted academicians in the city who clearly brought out to the public the need for a college in this part of the city. Among the important citizens of this part of Pune and the Cantonment who supported the idea were Sir Manekji Mehta, Prof. D. D. Kapadia, Shri A. B. Sethna, Rao Bahadur, Dr. R. K. Naidu, Dr. A. D'Gama and Sardar Mudaliar.

The beginning:-
An application was accordingly submitted to the University of Bombay for the affiliation of the proposed College for the teaching of the Arts course upto B.A. Pass and Honors examinations, and the Science course up to the Intermediate examination. The Nowrosjee Wadia College thus started as a full grade College, teaching courses up to the B. A. in several subjects and in Science up to the Inter Science Examination.

The difficulties to be encountered and surmounted during this initial period were many. The foremost among them was a search for a suitable campus and a commodious building in the eastern parts of the city of Pune or Pune Cantonment. Since, except the distant hoary Deccan College which was largely residential, there were no facilities for higher education in the eastern parts of the City of Poona or in the Poona Cantonment area and students from these parts had to go to the Sir Parshurambhau College or the Ferguson College for collegiate education To start with the Society took on rent on a five years' lease the Connaught House at 12 Connaught Road for temporarily housing the college. In addition, the Society also hired from Mr. E. A. Lalkaka, a portion of the late Sir N. P. Vakil's property situated just in front of the Connaught House, on the other side of the Connaught Road. These rented buildings between them had ample room for temporarily housing the College.

 Mission:-
To promote cultural and value education.
To maintain a conducive environment for educational activities.
To encourage faculty to improve their qualifications and to keep abreast of the latest developments in their respective fields.

    To generate resources.

Ness Wadia College Of Commerce In Pune

Ness Wadia College Of Commerce In Pune

About College:-
The background of the Ness Wadia College of Commerce can be traced back to June 1959 when the first Pre-degree Commerce class was started under the auspices of the Modern Education Society. The class then used to be held in the adjacent building of the Nowrosjee Wadia College of Arts and Science. In the years that followed the endeavor met with an increasingly enthusiastic response from the student community and soon a need to establish a full-fledged commerce college was keenly felt.

In 1969, the Commerce wing, thus, came to be established as an independent college of commerce, named after Sir Ness Wadia, (1873-1952), the renowned industrialist and philanthropist of his times. The Modern Education Society is deeply indebted to Sir Ness as well as his brother Sir Cusrow for their unstinting support to its endeavor. The College moved into its present premises with a building of its own in 1971.The College was inaugurated on 15th July 1969, by Dr. H. V. Pataskar, the then Vice-chancellor of the University of Pune. It moved into its present premises with a building of its own in 1971.

It came to be headed by the late Dr. B. S. Bhanage, one of the leading scholars of his times who later became the Vice-chancellor of Shivaji University. He was followed in 1972 by Professor V. K. Nulkar who retired in 1991. Professor Dr. H. M. Shaikh took over charge of the College from Principal Nulkar and remained Principal of the College till February 2000 when he retired. Dr. Ms. V. S. Devdhar took over as Principal in Feb 2000 on Principal Shaikh’s retirement. After her retirement in June 2009 Dr. H. V. Deosthali worked as Acting Principal till Dr. M. M. Andar took over on his retirement in January 2010.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME:-

The objective of the practice is to encourage the teachers in commerce colleges to cultivate the habit of research and enable them to present their research conclusions before the fellow teacher community. The Bhanage Memorial Seminar is an annual event and is organized in rotation by each department. The topic of the seminar is connected with the subjects taught under the department. At the end the papers presented are published in the form of a booklet.

A very difficult challenge in organizing a seminar like this is to ensure the availability of enough papers to be presented. The seminar date has to be decided well in advance so that the participants get enough time to prepare the paper. The faculty members therefore sound well in advance their colleagues in other colleges about the theme of the seminar. These are only some of the minor problems. The college has successfully got over these hurdles and been conducting the seminar over the last 14 years.

The practice consists of organizing a seminar for the teachers in the commerce colleges in Pune and its surroundings. The seminar is hosted by the various college departments in rotation and the theme of the seminar is related to the subjects taught under the hosting department. The college has nine departments thus requiring each department to organize the seminar once in nine years. The seminar has three sessions-inaugural, main and valedictory- presided over by experienced teachers or scholars or business professionals who make their comments at the end of the sessions on papers presented. The seminar is inaugurated at the hands of a well-known scholar or a person of eminence in the field of industry and commerce who delivers the key-note address. A small number of academically good students are invited to the seminar. The papers presented at the seminar are published in due course in the form of a compiled volume Bizz-Ness, (ISSN 2277-4823), is an annual peer reviewed journal which aims at honing the research skills among the teaching community.

LIBRARY:-

The College library is well equipped with a large number of text books, reference books, periodicals, journals and newspapers. The number of books in the library is at present, about 53,000 books (excluding discarded and lost books). The Library receives 103 periodicals.  It subscribes to Indian and foreign periodicals in specialized areas. Library is a member of N-List Programme of UGC, INFLIBNET Centre Ahmedabad.  The college Library also subscribes to e-journals like Journal of Entrepreneurship, Journal of Foreign Trade, Journal of Commerce and Management Thought, Dalal Street, Economic and Political Weekly.

We are a unique ICSE school with an outlook to create new learning paradigms. Our embarking on the world of children education has a strong backing of 30 years of experience since 1983 in the education arena. The tall standings of the Amrutvahini and SMBT in the fields of Medical, Engineering, Dental, Pharmacy, etc. vouch for our excellence.

Carry forwarding this unquestionable and glorious legacy, we are presenting an out of the box concept in education by upholding academic systems and hands-on learning, while ensuring enough and right exposure to theatre, digital arts and fine arts; which is a must for overall development of the child. The unitary motive is to let our children blossom freely and organically.

For us, education is a mission which is aflame with the quenchless passion. It's a circle whose radius never stops to grow. Though we are beginning with a nursery, Jr.KG and Sr.KG, the aim is to grow in strength and quality and start higher standard classes to impart more knowledge to children; undoubtedly the brightest hope of our nation

History:-
GLIMPSES OF GLORIOUS HISTORY ◊

With  the  end  of  the  East  India  Company's  regime  in  India  and  the  failure  of  the  first

started  functioning  on  this
campus  in  1895.  From  then  onwards,  the  college  has  grown  from
strength  to  strength  and  acquired  a  reputation  as  a  nation
