The market or rather the row of shops on either sides of the road, is said to be more than 70 years old. According to the book, 'Pune Itihaas Darshan' , during the time of the Peshwas, the market was located on Kasba Peth. It was later moved to Budhwar Peth and then to Laxmi road in 1940.
But historian Mandar Lavate bags to differ. So does Fatehchand Ranka, president of the Pune Saraf Association and a jeweller. "Laxmi road was conceptualised and planned by a prominent citizen, Diwan Bahadur Godbole, in 1912, which was finally completed in 1952. This happens to be the same road that we use today. As for the shops, some were located there even before the road was named Laxmi road. More shops began to appear in the later years, whereas some shops are quite recent constructions," says Lavate. The road was named after the goddess of wealth, as the basics of all business is wealth, he adds.
Talking about names, Fatehchand Ranka believes the road was named after the famous Dagdusheth Halwai's wife Laxmibai (Now, Dagdusheth is more popular for the Ganesh temple at Budhwar Peth.) "Dagdusheth Halwai was a social worker and a very pious person. The road was named after his wife."
It's possible to find everything on Laxmi road. But the highlight of the road is its cloth shops. For Devdas Swami, owner of the Gandhi Khadi Bhandar, the business has been the same over the years, barring the impact of inflation, of course. "My father started the shop in 1942. Gandhi was his partner's surname. Since my father was also a freedom fighter, the name was more than apt." The store sells all kinds of ready-made khadi clothes, and material as well. "We not only have regular customers who have been buying from us for the last 20 years, but also the younger generation who have taken a liking to khadi! Not to forget foreigners for whom getting such material at such a low cost is a novelty," he adds.
Ranka is equally upbeat, especially regarding the so-called competition with the so-called malls. "Not only do the malls sell things at an exorbitant price, they do have personalised customer services as we have hear. We have all our loyal customer base, who keep coming to us despite the advent of the malls."
But the fascination for the mall culture refuses to die. There are some shops even here who have turned themselves into mini-malls. "Earlier, there were smaller shops selling only select items like saris and dress materials. Now,
they have expanded and started selling even western clothes, among other things," Ranka says. As for jewellery, only two per cent of branded jewellery sells throughout the country, which means most people prefer customised stuff, he adds. Teacher Neha Subhedar moved to Pune from Jhansi almost three years ago, and soon discovered Laxmi road as 'the' place to go shopping. "They have a mind-boggling variety of clothes. Some stores here have turned themselves into mall, yet selling stuff cheaper. What more do you want?"
Another old shop is the sporting store near the Saraf Bazaar that sells trophies, medals and other such items. Owner Yadukar Wadnerkar says the shop was started by his father in 1934. "We also had a jewellery shop which was later closed down. But this store remains. Business is as usual, no change."
Apart from the clothes and jewellery stores, you have also shoe stores and eateries gracing the road; even woollen wear and wind-cheaters on roadside stalls. "We have our stalls throughout the year. But it's during the winter and monsoons that our business sees a rise," says Sanjay Thapa, who sells thermal wear.
Having witnessing the changes on the road, Ranka also has some reservations. "Earlier, Laxmi road was a residential area with old wadas surrounding it. But now, these are either being pulled down or being encroached upon. Also, there is no parking space which prompts customers to park their vehicles haphazardly, making the already congested road worse."
But whatever the problems may be, this is one place that never runs out of customers. As Ranka says, "People who come here actually come here to buy not to just spend time, which I feel, is the case with most malls."

This is most pathetic market I ever seen.
All the shopkeeprs think that footpath is their "baap ka property". You can see best ways to encroachment on public roads. You will see footpaths are just handed over to gundaa shopkeeper as its made for him only to hang his cheap and patheitc goods.
