Vishrambaug Wada Pune Attraction

Vishrambaug Wada Pune Attraction:-Maharashtra India

This magnificent mansion is a three storied building and is also known as the Teen Chowki Wada for the same. It was built by the last Peshwa, Bajirao II as his residence. The mansion is 260 feet long and 815 feet broad and is situated on the Thorale Bajirao Road.

The beautiful wada has an eye catching wooden facade and columns carved in Suru form. It was destructed by a sudden fire on October 31, 1880 but was somewhat restored to its original appearance by public subscriptions and municipal contributions. The mansion was initially a Poona Corporation Office until 1958. The Vishrambaug Wada now has a post office on its ground floor and a few other offices of the municipal corporation. It also has a small museum of Maratha artefacts gathered by a Maratha historian.Vishrambaug Wada is one of the assets to the city of Pune and an integral part of the rich cultural legacy of the city. One of the chief mansions of the Peshwas, the place has now become the center of attraction for the tourists and the students of history.

 Where is it?
The Vishrambaug Wada stands right in the middle of the city on the Bajirao Road adjacent to Laxmi Road. The famous paragon for shopping in Pune, Tulsibaug is right in front of the Vishrambaug Wada.

Historical Background:
Peshwa Bajirao, the second built this three-storied mansion in 1811 for his relaxation and entertainment. It was used as a residential quarter by Bajirao II. The entire construction of the Wada cost the considerable amount of around Rs.1 lakh. Since then the site has been the center of attraction for the people from and outside Pune.

The original construction was badly damaged in the fire in 1880. However, in the major renovations of the site, it was brought back to its original form as we see it today.

After the fall of Peshwa regime the British took hold of the Vishrambaug Wada and place was being used as a prison. From 1930 to 1958 the place was given to the Pune Municipal Corporation and housed many offices there.

The Ins and Outs of the Construction:
The Vishrambaug Wada has entirely been constructed in bricks. The beautiful entrance of the Wada surrounded by the balcony catches the eye of all at the outset. A big spacious dancing hall on the first floor of the Wada was meant for Bajirao’s entertainment. Ornately carved ceiling, beautiful pillars carved in teakwood and beautiful chandeliers

Beautiful carvings on the wood used in the balcony overlooking the building are the striking feature of the construction. We can look at the work as a fine example of art and architecture prevalent during the Peshwa regime. Purely processed quality wood colloquially called Saag has been used all around. The carvings here will thus last long as termites can’t affect the Saag wood. The sheer beauty of these carvings is an exquisite piece of Suru work and speaks about the good aesthetic sense of the Peshwa kings. Now visitors are not allowed to reach the balcony. The wooden beams of the balcony have become weak with the passage of time and as a safety measure the entrance to the balcony has been locked.
The sturdy latches and the locks on the doors of the Wada take us back to the good olden days of the Peshwa Empire. As you move around in the Wada, you can still experience the grandeur and the glory of the Peshwa Confederacy.
