Ness Wadia College Of Commerce In Pune

About College:-
The background of the Ness Wadia College of Commerce can be traced back to June 1959 when the first Pre-degree Commerce class was started under the auspices of the Modern Education Society. The class then used to be held in the adjacent building of the Nowrosjee Wadia College of Arts and Science. In the years that followed the endeavor met with an increasingly enthusiastic response from the student community and soon a need to establish a full-fledged commerce college was keenly felt.

In 1969, the Commerce wing, thus, came to be established as an independent college of commerce, named after Sir Ness Wadia, (1873-1952), the renowned industrialist and philanthropist of his times. The Modern Education Society is deeply indebted to Sir Ness as well as his brother Sir Cusrow for their unstinting support to its endeavor. The College moved into its present premises with a building of its own in 1971.The College was inaugurated on 15th July 1969, by Dr. H. V. Pataskar, the then Vice-chancellor of the University of Pune. It moved into its present premises with a building of its own in 1971.

It came to be headed by the late Dr. B. S. Bhanage, one of the leading scholars of his times who later became the Vice-chancellor of Shivaji University. He was followed in 1972 by Professor V. K. Nulkar who retired in 1991. Professor Dr. H. M. Shaikh took over charge of the College from Principal Nulkar and remained Principal of the College till February 2000 when he retired. Dr. Ms. V. S. Devdhar took over as Principal in Feb 2000 on Principal Shaikh’s retirement. After her retirement in June 2009 Dr. H. V. Deosthali worked as Acting Principal till Dr. M. M. Andar took over on his retirement in January 2010.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME:-

The objective of the practice is to encourage the teachers in commerce colleges to cultivate the habit of research and enable them to present their research conclusions before the fellow teacher community. The Bhanage Memorial Seminar is an annual event and is organized in rotation by each department. The topic of the seminar is connected with the subjects taught under the department. At the end the papers presented are published in the form of a booklet.

A very difficult challenge in organizing a seminar like this is to ensure the availability of enough papers to be presented. The seminar date has to be decided well in advance so that the participants get enough time to prepare the paper. The faculty members therefore sound well in advance their colleagues in other colleges about the theme of the seminar. These are only some of the minor problems. The college has successfully got over these hurdles and been conducting the seminar over the last 14 years.

The practice consists of organizing a seminar for the teachers in the commerce colleges in Pune and its surroundings. The seminar is hosted by the various college departments in rotation and the theme of the seminar is related to the subjects taught under the hosting department. The college has nine departments thus requiring each department to organize the seminar once in nine years. The seminar has three sessions-inaugural, main and valedictory- presided over by experienced teachers or scholars or business professionals who make their comments at the end of the sessions on papers presented. The seminar is inaugurated at the hands of a well-known scholar or a person of eminence in the field of industry and commerce who delivers the key-note address. A small number of academically good students are invited to the seminar. The papers presented at the seminar are published in due course in the form of a compiled volume Bizz-Ness, (ISSN 2277-4823), is an annual peer reviewed journal which aims at honing the research skills among the teaching community.

LIBRARY:-

The College library is well equipped with a large number of text books, reference books, periodicals, journals and newspapers. The number of books in the library is at present, about 53,000 books (excluding discarded and lost books).
